Odds and Ends 3/31-4/6

-Very positive and well-written reviews have continued to crop up for Rusalka

     - This was Dvořák's week: that production took place on Sunday 3/30, Monday 3/31 was the 113th anniversary of the opera's first performance, and on Tuesday 4/1 the composer would have celebrated his 173rd birthday somebody on Facebook totally got me with the most benign yet oddly specific April Fool's joke I've ever seen

     - Fun detail I forgot to mention: at last week's yMusic concert, violinist Rob Moose praised Durham culture and restaurants, specifically shouting out my favorite sandwich place, Toast. Yay Toast.

     - Speaking of yMusic, at least one of you arrived here via their website after they kindly shared my review of the concert (aka I'm famous now)

     - My review of that concert has been edited to reflect a correction: the electronic sounds in Jamie Keesecker's piece, Chrysalides, were not prerecorded, but created in real-time. I became aware of this during an interview with Jamie that will post on the blog today or tomorrow--keep your eyes peeled!

     - If you haven't made your live-classical-music listening plans for this weekend yet, here are some recommendations:

BEETHOVEN'S SYMPHONY NO. 9 IN D MINOR, Duke Symphony Orchestra & Chorale featuring soloists Andrea Edith Moore, Elizabeth Tredent, Timothy Culver, and Brian Johnson. Saturday 4/5 8 PM Baldwin Auditorium

MELODIES OF SPRING, Duke Chamber Players featuring Dvořák's New World Symphony, William Grant Still's Danzas de Panama, Finlandia by Sibelius, and selections from the Harry Potter score (!!!!). Sunday 4/6 3 PM Page Auditorium

DUKE NEW MUSIC ENSEMBLE PRESENTS CABARET SONGS, featuring Duke composers' arrangements of & pieces inspired by turn-of-the-century French cabaret music in collaboration with Duke Ph.D. candidates in Art History. Sunday 4/6 5 PM Fullsteam Brewery1

BROOKLYN RIDER AND SOPRANO DAWN UPSHAW, performing "works specially picked by the quartet for Chapel Hill's bold audience"--don't know what this means but sounds exciting. Sunday 4/6 7:30 PM Memorial Hall at UNC

1 If you can't make this event, don't worry; the same program will be presented next Sunday at the same time in Baldwin Auditorium. However, Jamie Keesecker informs me that that showing will be "very serious with no beer."
